Commandant Claude Boursot was an artillery officer and a trusted member of the staff of Napoleon Bonaparte. He accompanied Napoleon through the entire Italian Campaign and key parts of the Revolutionary War. He had been a student of Napoleon briefly in 1788 at the École d'artillerie in Auxonne. Following being wounded in a serious skirmish at the border of Italy and France in 1797, Commandant Claude Boursot was transferred to HQ Intelligence duties and subsequently, in 1802, he was transferred to Calais and given the important job of regional head of intelligence and he was also given a civilian job as secretary to the Archivist. On the 10th August 1811, Commandant Claude Boursot resigned as intellegence officer for Napoleon Bonaparte and took the permanent civilian job as the Archivist for Calais. He was married and had several children.

One of the services Commandant Claude Boursot provided for Napoleon was to procure Champagne for him and to ship it to wherever Napoleon was in Europe. The French did not like Champagne that much but it was Napoleon's favourite drink. The expatriate British in Calais also liked the drink and before long, first Claude Boursot and afterwards his son, Adolphe Pierre Claude Boursot procured the drink for them. This was the start of what was later to become England's largest Champagne importer.
