b Herefordshire d Marylebone, London Minnie was the youngest daughter of Thomas Kinder, JP of Sandridge Bury, St Albans. Around the turn of the twentieth century, Sir John Collier painted Minnie’s portrait. After Minnie's death this very large picture was bequeathed to their only surviving son, Dr Harold Kinder Griffith. The painting was subsequently hung at Roydon in Torquay and Little Orchard in Kingsley Green, the two final homes of Dr Griffith and his wife. On his death, the painting passed to their eldest son Anthony Chevallier Griffith. When Anthony and his wife and family moved to a smaller home in the late 1970s, he offered the painting to his sister Mary and the two surviving brothers, Geoffrey and John. The offers were declined on the basis of the painting being too large to be accommodated. Mary Griffith subsequently donated the painting to Brighton Art Museum. Helena Griffith (nee Morley Fletcher) had a length of the pink embroidered taffeta and Brussels lace used in the gown worn by Minnie in the painting. In the 1950s, she gave a piece of the fabric and lace to her granddaughter Vanessa Griffith, from which she could make a dress for her doll. She still has this in her possession. Collier also painted a small study of Minnie in preparation for the large portrait and this is in the ownership of Mary Helena Griffith, her granddaughter. This miniature is reproduced opposite.
